Earlier this week, for only the second time in my career (18 years now), I made a cancer diagnosis in a child. A beautiful little three year-old girl with curly hair came in with unexplained bruises. The blood work confirmed the worst. She has leukemia. My heart sank and it was tough to hold back tears when I called the parents with the news.
It's amazing how such things bring instant perspective. The economy is bad, gross revenues are down, people are losing their homes and jobs. But they know they can dig out of it. For many what is the worst case scenario? They move in with family or end up in a small apartment? They still can hug their children at night and not worry about them dying. Puts a whole new spin on things.
